Spotting sickness in a small ruminant herd may seem easier because fewer animals are involved. However, larger commercial herds demand sharper observation and experience today.

In extensive commercial production, sick animals may hide subtle signs such as reduced feeding, isolation, abnormal movement, coughing, or declining performance before obvious illness appears.

An experienced farm worker understands normal animal behaviour and can quickly recognize changes that untrained labour may overlook, helping farmers respond before problems become costly.

Skilled workers also support accurate records, feeding routines, hygiene, observation, handling, and early reporting. Their expertise can reduce losses and improve overall farm productivity daily.

Therefore, hiring labour should not be based solely on the lowest wage. The right worker represents a significant investment in animal health, efficiency, and profitability.

The real question for every commercial livestock farmer is simple: are you prepared to pay fairly for skilled labour that protects your animals and investment?
