MODERN FARMING REQUIRES MEASUREMENT, NOT GUESSWORK

August 07, 2026

Modern agribusiness demands accurate information, and animal weight is one of the most important measurements for making better management and feeding decisions on every farm. Progress requires measurement.

Recently, I compared one of my animals with a mentee’s animal, and we disagreed about which looked bigger during our visual assessment on the farm. Appearance can deceive.

We decided to settle the matter objectively by weighing both animals, and surprisingly, mine weighed more, proving that appearance can sometimes be misleading in practice. Weigh before judging.

Weighing animals fortnightly helps farmers monitor progress, identify setbacks early, estimate feed conversion efficiency, and recognize animals requiring special attention or improved management before losses. Monitor regularly.

Modern farming should embrace measurement, records, technology, and informed decisions. Relying entirely on traditional practices may limit productivity and keep farmers unnecessarily mediocre commercially today. Embrace modern methods.

We are in a modern agricultural age where knowledge and evidence should guide our actions. Measure what matters, improve consistently, and build profitable enterprises successfully. Measure, learn, improve.

Have a good day.
