Enterotoxemia, also called pulpy kidney disease, is a rapidly progressing and often fatal disease caused by Clostridium perfringens bacteria, threatening growing lambs. Prevention saves lives.

Sudden access to rich grain or lush pasture can overwhelm digestion, allowing bacteria to multiply and produce toxins that damage intestines and organs. Feed wisely.

Signs may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloat, weakness, staggering, or convulsions, although many affected animals die suddenly before symptoms become visible. Act early to protect.

Because enterotoxemia progresses extremely quickly, treatment may be unsuccessful. Vaccinate ewes before lambing and vaccinate lambs according to veterinary recommendations and schedules. Vaccination matters greatly.

Avoid sudden dietary changes, introduce concentrates gradually, maintain consistent feeding, and prevent overeating. Careful feeding management significantly reduces dangerous digestive disturbances. Consistency protects flock health.

With appropriate vaccination, gradual feeding, and flock monitoring, farmers can reduce enterotoxemia losses and protect productivity. Prevention remains the strongest investment. Healthy sheep, stronger farms.
