The disease is caused by Clostridium chauvoei, whose hardy spores survive in soil. Infection follows ingestion or contaminated wounds reaching muscles. Biosecurity reduces exposure risks.

Affected cattle suddenly develop fever, depression, painful muscle swelling, and severe lameness. Disease progresses rapidly, leaving little opportunity for successful treatment. Early recognition is essential.

Death often occurs within forty-eight hours, while post-mortem examination reveals dark, foul-smelling muscles containing characteristic gas formation and tissue destruction. Rapid action limits losses.

Routine vaccination, proper carcass disposal, sound pasture management, and strict farm hygiene remain the most effective defenses against Blackleg outbreaks. Prevention always outperforms treatment.
