Healthy rabbits depend on a constantly moving digestive system for survival. Gastrointestinal stasis silently disrupts digestion, quickly threatening life when ignored. Early recognition and prompt intervention save lives.
Low-fiber feeding, dehydration, sudden diet changes, stress, dental problems, pain, and hidden illnesses commonly trigger gastrointestinal stasis. Providing consistent nutrition and proper management greatly reduces preventable risks.
Affected rabbits often stop eating, produce few or no droppings, become weak, grind their teeth, or develop painful abdominal swelling. Never ignore these warning signs because delays worsen outcomes.
Veterinary treatment includes fluid therapy, pain management, medications stimulating gut movement, nutritional support, and correcting underlying diseases. Severe obstruction or complications may require surgery. Immediate professional care improves survival.
Prevention begins with unlimited quality hay, clean water, balanced feeding, regular dental examinations, stress reduction, and daily observation. Rabbits refusing food or droppings beyond one day need urgent veterinary attention.
